Are you ready for some football?! Woooooo! I have goosebumps just thinking of Hank Williams Jr. singing the Monday Night Football song. Ahhhhhh! Thank God the lull between the NBA Finals and preseason NFL football is over. There are only so many homeruns and double play highlights I can stand to watch on SportsCenter’s Top 10… They all start looking the same after awhile!

Here are my Top 3 Players to Watch this year:

Larry Fitzgerald is my favorite football player and has been since he was first drafted by the Arizona Cardinals out of The University of Pittsburgh. I love the tenacity and energy he plays with. Unlike Terrell Owens, Plaxico Burress, and others, Larry never takes a play “off”. He plays with a style and flair that excites me and inspires me. His fantasy value has sky rocketed this year after a breakout 2008-2009 campaign. He is undoubtedly the trendy pick of the year in fantasy circles. His success hinges on old man Warner’s health, however. I disagree with most of the pundits that claim his success depends on the health of fellow reciever Anquan Boldin. Cynics site that 6 of Fitzgerald’s 12 touchdowns came in games that Boldin was hurt and inactive. I personally think it benefits both Fitzgerald and Boldin to have each other on the field. Opposing defenses will not be able to double either player as they would with one sidelined. Watch for both of these guys to have a stellar season as the running game should open things up even more as it has been showing signs of improvement as of late, as well.

Adrian Peterson is a man-child. He runs angry and with a purpose. I love that he’s not affraid to dip his shoulder and truck a linebacker or DB to get an extra yard or two. He has toned down his shiftiness and learned to be an aggressive down-hill runner. He’s also running behind a strong and healthy O-Line. I refuse to buy into the preseason hype that Maurice Jones-Drew will be the #1 fantasy back this year.

Drew Brees is “The General” of the NFL. No quarterback in the league has the number of weapons in their arsenal that Brees has. When you are throwing it to Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem, and Jeremy Shockey it’s hard to not put up staggering numbers. Not to mention he has the luxury of dumping the ball off to Reggie Bush, “The Human Video Game”. Bush routinely turns 2 and 3 yard underneath dump routes into 20 and 30 yard plays with his speed and shiftiness. Pierre Thomas also adds strength to Brees’ squad as he must also be accounted for by opposing defenses. I look for Brees to have a season right on par with his 2008-2009 campaign.
